Clallam County PUD Goes LED for the Holidays, Children’s Decorating Party to Kickoff Season

12/8/2009

(Port Angeles, WA) – “Clallam County PUD has gone LED for the holidays,” announced Fred Mitchell, Manager of Power Supply and Utility Services for Clallam County PUD. “We’ve swapped out and recycled our old incandescent holiday lighting and put a variety of vibrant and energy-efficient LED lighting on display in all our offices to show our customers the many benefits of LEDs.” To celebrate the occasion, children of PUD employees will decorate the PUD Headquarters lobby with handmade decorations today from 1:30 – 5:00 pm. The decorations will remain on display through year’s end.

No longer a specialty item, energy-efficient LED (Light Emitting Diode) holiday lighting has evolved significantly in just a few short years, and is now widely available in a broad range of colors and styles. Among their many benefits, Energy Star® qualified LED holiday lights:

  • Typically use 90 to 95 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. According to Energy Star®, if everyone in the country made the switch to qualified LED holiday lights, 2 billion kilowatt-hours per year could be saved nationally -- that’s enough power to supply every PUD customer in Clallam County for 3 years.
  • Have a lifespan of 20,000 hours (roughly 40 holiday seasons), requiring fewer replacements.
  • Are cool to the touch, reducing the risk of fire and/or injury.
  • Do not have glass, filaments or moving parts, so they are much more durable and shock resistant than other strings.
  • Are independently tested to meet strict lifetime electrical requirements.
  • Are available with color shifting and/or dimming features.
  • Qualified for outdoor use have passed stringent weathering tests.

Clallam County PUD encourages its customers to stop by their local PUD office to learn more about energy-efficient LED holiday lighting and the wide array of energy-saving weatherization, heating, appliance, and renewable energy programs offered by the PUD.
