Public Utility District Announces Land Purchase, Carlsborg Parcel Will Support Efficient Operations

2/17/2010

(Port Angeles, Wash.) – Clallam County Public Utility District #1 today completed the purchase of 5.32 acres of land adjacent to its Carlsborg Operations Center on Idea Pl. The $335,000 purchase increases the District’s flexibility as it pursues its long-term plan of centralizing operations in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.

“Our 2008 long-term planning process identified ways for the District to pursue the highest levels of efficiency by consolidating operations and locating them to a more central location for our customers,” said PUD General Manager Doug Nass. “This parcel adjoining our seven-acre Carlsborg Operations Center gives us important flexibility as we implement that plan. Efficient operations are key to the District’s efforts to provide reliable service and effectively manage costs. Today’s market conditions for real estate created an incentive to take this action now rather than later and create long-term savings as a result.”

Due east of the District’s Carlsborg Operations Center (COC), the parcel at 213 Windy Way is open residential land. The District’s supplies and materials inventory and operations, and associated staff are being moved from the COC to the new Central Warehouse Facility at the junction of Highway 101 and Hooker Rd. in Carlsborg. This move creates room at the COC for the District’s auto shop and mechanics, facilities maintenance and safety personnel, and vegetation management crews and equipment. They are currently at the Port Angeles Operations Center located near the Port Angeles airport. The move also opens up storage space to better protect vehicles and equipment.

The specific use of the new parcel will be defined through the District’s strategic planning process. It defines the best ways to manage District people and resources to provide customers reliable, safe and efficient utility services in a financially and environmentally responsible manner.
