In the winter months, it can be tempting to fire up a space heater or other heat source for extra warmth or to provide heat in the case of a power outage. However, there are important safety considerations to keep in mind:
- Keep combustible objects at least 3 feet away from portable
- Only buy heaters evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and designated for indoor use.
- Read the operation and safety instructions for any heating device.
- Check to make sure the portable heater has a thermostat control mechanism and will switch off automatically if the heater falls over.
- Only use crystal clear K-1 kerosene in kerosene heaters. Never overfi ll it. Use the heater in a well-ventilated room away from curtains and other fl ammable items.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms and make sure to replace the batteries on a regular schedule.
- Never use a stove range or oven to heat your home.
- Keep combustible and flammable liquids away from heat sources.
- Portable generators should never be used indoors and should only be refueled outdoors and in well-ventilated areas.
